National Senior Citizens Day is held on the same day every year, and just like all years before it, Senior Citizens Day 2019 will fall Image of balloons to celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on August 21.on August 21. The day was first enacted in the 1990s under President Ronald Reagan, to help bring awareness to issues that affect senior citizens and the elderly, as well as to give them a special day to celebrate. Whether you’ve never heard of Senior Citizens Day or it’s something you celebrate every year, there are a few ideas (and discounts) to take part in to enjoy this day with friends and family.

Things to Do on Senior Citizens Day

There’s perhaps nothing better to do when it comes to senior citizens day activities than to spend time with family and friends. Maybe your family and caregivers will throw a barbecue or light lunch, but there are many senior citizen day ideas besides, including going out and being social. Many senior citizen centers and agencies that advocate for the elderly have celebrations at their facilities, such as concerts, bingo, dancing, video games, among other events.

As the day approaches, it’s a good idea to call several local senior centers to see if there is anything happening on August 21 – and if friends and family are invited. Another fun thing to do is go out to eat on Senior Citizens Day. Some corporations regularly give travel and meal discounts in addition to their regular ones.

Possible Discounts on Senior Citizens Day

While different organizations offer different discounts or opportunities on August 21, many of the same restaurants and businesses offer the same discounts year after year. Some of these include:

  • Denny’s, in addition to their usual senior discount, often has a senior menu on this day as well.
  • Amtrak, in addition to discounted fares, also offers extra discounts on this day also.
  • Kohl’s typically offers special discounts on this national day as well.
  • Other stores or shops that may offer discounts include Verizon Wireless, Pep Boys, and T-Mobile

Beyond offering discounts on the day, many restaurants, such as IHOP, offer discounts every day, all year round.

How to Help the Elderly on National Senior Citizens Day

If you’re not a senior citizen, but are a caregiver, a family member, or simply someone who wants to help, there are several things you can do, such as volunteer at a Senior Citizens Day celebration, or become involved with nonprofit organizations that help senior citizens. Not only can you help out and volunteer specifically on this day, but you can find out how to get more active year-round. The National Council on Aging is a good place to start, but there are also other local places to volunteer that are easy to find. Local senior citizen centers are often looking for help.
