Tips for Preventing Slip and Fall Accidents Within the Home

Slip and fall accidents are a growing problem among the elderly and people with mobility issues. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, more than one in three people over the age of 65 suffer a fall at least once every year. You can help to prevent slip and fall accidents in your own home by following these tips:

Remove Hazards

Slip and fall accidents often originate from trips over furniture, boxes, or debris. If you or a loved one suffers from a lack of mobility, removing clutter from high-traffic areas is important. Remove boxes, move furniture, and store essential items in easy-to-reach places. You will also want to be sure that all loose rugs and floor mats are secure and flat to the floor.

Install Grab Bars and Railings

Grab bars and railings can dramatically reduce the risk of falls in a home. You may want to install railings in areas of high use such as hallways and on both sides of a stairway. Bathrooms are often slippery, so installing grab bars around bathtubs, toilets, and showers is a must.

Improve Your Lighting

Many slip and fall accidents happen at night, when it is often difficult to see hazards. This is especially true for elderly people who may suffer from vision loss. Make sure your home is amply lit by adding additional lamps and night-lights, and by keeping flashlights in easy-to-access locations.

Install Chair Lifts or Other Mobility Aids

Climbing and descending chairs is one of the biggest hazards for people with mobility issues. Installing a chair lift can do much to reduce this safety risk. Work with a reputable stairway lift company to find the most economical, efficient, and safe option.

At Williams Lift Company, we sell, rent, and install stairway lifts for people throughout New Jersey. Our customers trust us to meet all of their home mobility needs. Call us at 908-322-7070 to find out more about our current selection.
