Golfing for Seniors: The Many Benefits of Golf

If you’re wondering “what does golf does for your body,” and you’re a senior, the benefits are many. Golf has the unique ability to provide physical stimulation without being too over strenuous, but gold provides other rewards as well. Many also ask, “is golf good for your brain,” and the answer is also “yes,” because it provides mental challenges and problem-solving skills for both seniors and younger players alike. Read on to learn more about golfing for seniors, senior golf association groups and leagues that might be native and local to NJ, and other tips and tricks, such as warm-up exercises, to help with your golf game.

Golfing for Seniors: Golf Tips for Seniors

Whether you’re a seasoned pro and already a part of senior golf groups or are just starting out, you might want to know what the best golf clubs for senior players are. First, it may be a good idea to answer the question, “What age is a senior golfer?”. Unlike other areas, where the answer to that question is 65 and over, a senior golfer is a man or woman who is age 50 or over. So, if you were to play in an NJ senior golf tournament, for example, you could qualify at age 50 or above.

The best golf clubs for golfing seniors are often rated by set. Very often, reviewers will assume that you will be purchasing the entire set. Rated very highly are the men’s Callaway Men’s Strata complete set and the TaylorMade M2 combo set for men. The Callaway Strata for women is also highly rated for senior ladies, as is the Wilson Golf Profile SGI complete set.

Generally speaking, the easiest golf swing for seniors would be to putt in a ball when it’s close to a hole. If you’re going to play a competitive game of golf, you need to know how to perform every swing correctly. However, performing the right golf exercises at home can help keep golfing for seniors safe, so that you’re able to perform every swing.

Golfing for Seniors: Golf Exercises for Seniors

There are golf warm-up exercises you can do to make sure that you’re sufficiently warmed up well before you get to the course.

There are three stretching exercises you can do:

  • The first one requires sitting in a chair with arms.
  • Scoot to the edge of the chair, and sit very straight and stretch your spine.
  • Place your left hand on your right knee while twisting to the right and feeling the stretch.
  • Do the same on the other side.

Another exercise for golfing seniors involves sitting in the same chair but folding your right ankle on top of your left knee. Press down on the knee and hold for 10 seconds, letting go if you feel any pain.

The third stretch involves lying down flat on the floor—lifting your pelvis up from the floor for 15 to 20 seconds at a time. This should strengthen your core muscles.

Golfing for Seniors: New Jersey Senior Golf Association and Other Clubs

If you’re interested in playing in golfing for seniors events, whether competitively or for fun, locally in NJ, there are a few places to play. The New Jersey Senior Golf Association has a series of 2020 tournaments at local country clubs, with information up on their website. There is also a New Jersey senior golf league that begins in March 2020 and also holds tournaments. The most formal of competition is likely the NJ Senior Open golf tournament, which is a semi-professional tournament. Information about the upcoming 2020 schedule is on their website as well.
