Finding the Right Upright Walker for Adults

For adults and seniors that have balance or mobility issues, using an upright walker for adults can help with so many things inside and outside of the home and can help someone get around easily and safely when they once could not. However, there are several different types of standing walkers for adults, and trying to find the right one can be a bit confusing. Read on to learn about the different types of walkers and which one may be the best choice.

What Are the Different Types of Upright Walkers for Adults?

There are essentially five different types of upright walkers for adults, but it really depends on the type of issues that your loved one or patient has to determine which one may be the best choice. The different types include:

  • Standard walker. They have no wheels but offer the best stability as you hold onto it. However, the person must be able to pick it up off the ground to move it.
  • Two-wheel walker. This is one of the most popular types of upright walkers for adults. This walker has wheels on the two front legs so that you can roll it along if you need to, but you can also use the back legs for stability as needed.
  • Three-wheel walker. This walker has one leg for stability, so it is for a person with fewer balance problems. However, this walker is extremely lightweight and is the easiest to maneuver.
  • Four-wheel walker. Also known as a Rollator, this walker is another popular choice. It has wheels on all four legs and is for people who do not need to lean for balance but need the walker to help maneuver themselves around.
  • Knee walker. This type is very similar to a scooter but has a platform where you can rest your knee.

What Type of Upright Walker for Adults Is Best?

It depends on what type of support you need. For those who have stability problems or medical problems, an upright walker with no wheels or with two wheels is best, as they provide more stability.

A Rollator walker often comes with a seat, giving the person a chance to rest as they are walking. This provides a different benefit than someone who needs stability with a walker. If you’re wondering about safety issues such as, “can adults using an upright walker use ramps safely?”, the answer is ‘yes’, but they must be cautious.

Walkers with wheels can slip. The person should take caution and may need help if they have trouble getting up a slope. An upright walker with no wheels may be easier to move up a ramp, depending on the incline.

There are many different types with various features, whether it’s four-wheel upright walkers for adults or Rollators. You can find some with backrests, baskets for carrying items, locking wheels for safety (most walkers with wheels will have this feature), under-seat storage, and comfortable hand grips. Also, be sure to check the weight capacity on upright walkers for adults, as they can vary.
