3 Signs That Your Loved One May Need Home Mobility Aids

Increasing accessibility for disabled loved ones at home is not only a matter of convenience, but it’s also a matter of safety. Without the necessary mobility aids, it can be difficult for someone with disabilities to navigate his or her own home. This can lead to dangerous situations, such as falling or slipping. Take a look at some signs that your loved one may need mobility aids:

1. Inability to Walk Up or Down Stairs

Stairs can be challenging for someone who uses a wheelchair, has extreme leg pains, or suffers from limited leg function. If a loved one has trouble using the stairs in his or her home, there are many ways to increase accessibility. For outdoor spaces, use a threshold ramp to make walking up stairs or using a wheelchair easier. A modular ramp system may be necessary for larger flights of outdoor stairs. Indoor stairs won’t be a problem if you install a stair lift or chair lift.

2. Difficulty Walking

If walking on flat surfaces is a problem, a walker may be necessary. Walkers are used to provide additional support while standing. This helps to relieve pressure of the legs and back, and makes walking easier. Some walkers even have seats built into them to allow for comfortable rest.

3. Slipping in the Bath

The bathroom is where many slip and fall accidents occur, particularly when people are trying to get in and out of the bath tub. To prevent these accidents, you can read our article about bathroom safety.
